- Course objectives
- The Academic Writing course focuses mainly on students' written expression in English in the production of professional work at the academic level, and additionally includes techniques for effective communication and presentation and successful defence of professional qualification work. The emphasis of the course is on the adequate stylistic and grammatical level of academic texts in English, on the expansion of vocabulary, and can also help in the translation of professional texts. The purpose of this course is to help students improve and polish their academic writing skills in English, thus allowing them to make the most of their studies at NU and prepare them for any professional challenges down the road that require excellent writing and argumentative skills. Each student will write two academic essays (1,000 words and 2,500 words) and make one group presentation (20 min) and will serve as a peer discussants on another student's essay. The seminar leader will guide students' essay preparation and give them detailed feedback on what and how to improve. Students will leave this course with enhanced analytical and argumentative skills, as well as general improvements in their written English. Course Objectives: to improve the quality of students' professional written and oral expression in English; to master techniques of adequate stylistic construction and grammatical correctness of English professional text; to expand vocabulary and the ability to use appropriate phrases in professional language.

- Main topics of the course (teaching is divided into 6x 2 hour seminars): Academic writing skills: style, paragraphing, punctuation, recurrent errors, words to avoid Academic writing skills: topic sentence, reporting words, phrases Academic writing skills: essay structure, coherence, development of text Presentation and discussion skills Communication skills Presentation and defence of the qualification thesis An integral part of the teaching is the students' home preparation in the form of creating partial academic texts according to the teacher's assignment as well as the preparation of the final seminar paper for credit.
- Assessment methods
- Credit (pres., dist.): preparation and submission of a specified number of homework assignments including a final seminar paper (2 essays – 1,000 and 2,500 words). Part of the conditions for obtaining credit is the subsequent defense of the seminar work in front of the teacher and other students.
