Course objectives

A significant feature of the contemporary global economy and business environment is the steadily growing importance of political and cultural influences, as well as the increasing interconnectedness of business, politics, and culture. This trend is related both to the current state of globalisation, which has substantially interconnected world markets and, consequently, diverse political, social, and cultural systems, and to the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the consequences of the most recent global economic crisis.asean+1

These developments have, in turn, reinforced deglobalisation tendencies and strengthened the influence of the state and other public institutions, including the rise of political and economic nationalism, as reflected in the slogan “America First”. This has contributed to a weakening of the influence of international and supranational organisations and of economic and political integration, in favour of nation states. As a result, the influence of national political representatives on the economic and business environment is likely to increase further.cambridge+1

Attention will also be paid to current issues such as international migration and its political, security-related, and economic implications; the series of crises in the European Union; and the rise of economically and militarily powerful yet non-democratic or semi-democratic political systems—such as China, Russia, and Turkey—relative to the democratic West.
