Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the issues of politics, political science, and current social and political developments—both in the Czech Republic and in other European countries and beyond. It is based on topics from classical political science (political theory, elections and electoral systems, political parties and party systems, etc.), which are combined with both the theoretical definition of political and social systems and their practical application. In addition to the necessary theoretical foundation, students will also learn about the current problems of selected countries, their societies, and politics (migration, demographic changes, growing cultural and political conflicts, increasing social inequality, the emergence of new political parties and movements, the crisis of existing political models and systems, so-called traditional parties, etc.), which are fundamentally changing their character.

  • Society – development, structuring, current issues
  • Political science and politics – definition, social roles, actors, possibilities, and limitations
  • History of Political, State, and Social Theories I.
  • History of Political, State, and Social Theories II – Political Ideologies and Their Role in Political and Social Systems
  • Typology of political regimes – democratic, undemocratic, semi-democratic
  • Political parties and their divisions
  • Elections and electoral systems
  • Political and social system of the Czech Republic
  • Political and Social Systems I (selected European countries)
  • Political and Social Systems II (selected non-European countries)
Assessment methods
Examination: written final test, (in the case of resit dates) oral examination
