Course objectives

The aim of the course is to introduce students to rational methods for solving decision-making problems in both the public and private sectors. This includes gaining knowledge about decision-making processes and their structures, applying teamwork principles, and understanding the choice of decision-making styles. The course also aims to explain the fundamental methods and tools for decision-making under certainty, risk, and uncertainty, as well as to describe risk management. Ultimately, the course seeks to develop students' ability to create and apply theoretical knowledge in accordance with the principles of critical thinking.

Course Objectives:

  • to gain insight into rational decision-making problem-solving practices in the public and private sectors;

  • to gain knowledge of decision-making processes and their structure;

  • to become familiar with the application of teamwork principles and the choice of decision-making style;

  • to be able to explain the basic methods and tools of decision-making under certainty, risk, and uncertainty;

  • to describe risk management;

  • to develop the ability to create and apply theoretical knowledge in accordance with the principles of critical thinking.

Syllabus
  1. Main topics of the course (topics of individual lectures):

    1. Introduction to Managerial Decision Making.

    2. Flow of decision-making processes and the classification of decision-making problems.

    3. Situational analysis and identification of decision problems.

    4. Analysis of decision problems, including methods of causal analysis.

    5. Information acquisition, covering types and sources of data, along with methodology for acquisition and verification.

    6. Selection of criteria and methods for determining criteria weights.

    7. Formation of options and determination of their consequences.

    8. Evaluation of options, focusing on multi-criteria decision-making.

    9. Specifics of decision-making under uncertainty and risk.

    10. Group decision-making, including methods, styles, and procedures.

    11. Choice of decision-making style.

    12. Risk management in business systems.

    Incorporating lectures by external managers is an integral part of the course to inspire students to take a deeper interest in the subject. The seminars will also include case studies and assignments drawn from the practices of both business and non-business entities.

    Topics of individual seminars (implemented in the scope of 2 hours of teaching once every 14 days):

    1. Analysis of decision problems and methods of causal analysis.

    2. Selection of criteria and methods for determining criteria weights.

    3. Evaluation of variants, focusing on multi-criteria decision-making.

    4. Specifics of decision-making under uncertainty and risk.

    5. Group decision-making, including methods, styles, and procedures.

    6. Risk management in business systems.
