Course objectives

The course Banking and Financial Markets is focused on acquiring basic knowledge of the banking sector and its functions. By completing the course, students will gain a realistic overview of the principles of central bank operations as a regulator of financial markets in the Czech Republic, as well as insight into the harmonisation of national financial markets in the countries of the European Union.

Students will also acquire knowledge of the banking system, banking products, and the development of banking. Attention is paid to commercial banking and the functions of commercial banks. The course also covers the position and functions of the European Central Bank and the European System of Central Banks.

The course is based on knowledge of the macroeconomic nature of money and the basic premises of contemporary management. It introduces students to the institutional and legal framework of the monetary system and financial markets. Students are prepared for the performance of various roles in the banking and financial sector.

  2. Central banking, its position in the economy, functions and instruments
  3. Commercial banks, their functions and instruments
  4. Bank management and performance, risks in banking
  5. Loans, deposits, mortgages, payment systems
  6. Banking products in the corporate banking segment
  7. Basic credit analyses and portfolio management
  8. Alternative financing and off-balance-sheet transactions
  9. Investing, investment instruments, investment securities
  10. Organisation and functioning of capital markets, equity securities
  11. Spot and forward transactions, financial derivatives, securitisation
  12. Investment instruments, collective investment, project financing
Assessment methods

Full-time form of study: Method of course completion – examination. Examination requirements: a written test with a minimum success rate of 60%, followed by an oral examination covering the knowledge of the topics presented in the lectures.

Combined form of study: The examination consists of both a written and an oral part. The examination covers the content of all individual lectures within the course.
